‘Appropriate time’
I believe that there is a time and a place for everything. Not in terms of actions or words, but in terms of media and other information. For example, I first heard the Silver Jews in high school and while I liked them I never cared to give them the time of day nor to listen to an album in full. Years go by, and today, probably six years from the time I first heard them, I picked up an album from the Zablocki library (not that that library is particularly amazing, I just like the name). The album feels so wonderful. Perfect to make little paintings and stare out the window. Perfect to be in emotional limbo for brief moments. This sort of ‘appropriate time’ occurance has extended to all parts of my creative and research life: blogs, books, artists, theories, histories, politics.
At another library earlier today I picked up a book I remember reshelving back at Borders. The book came out while I worked there, and since I headed the art department I had the choice to put it on display or not. I didn’t despite everyone’s interest in the book. I blame my disinterest on my ‘appropriate time’ theory. I was not ready to face this book with any sort of enthusiasm. But, today, I did have that enthusiasm. In fact the book fits in so neatly to my current interest in ‘homework’ with Katie.
